Formula for Success

Just a few short months ago we were talking about making New Years Resolutions.  Wikipedia says "...commitments normally go into effect on New Year's Day and remain unfulfilled or abandoned."  Congress, when faced with the inability to reach agreement on an issue will make a resolution.  Hmmm...resolutions don't seem to have a great reputation.

However, if you've turned your resolution into a goal, you already know that to be effective, a goal has to be something that can be measured.  I'm going to be nicer is difficult to measure.  I'm going to walk a mile each day is measureable.  A goal has to be related to time - if you're like me, deadlines have a magical quality...!

But, you say, I've done all that and still I get off track and fall short of achieving my goal.  What's the magic formula that's missing?

Many of us have started with a resolution.  We may have even made attempts to make it SMART - Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, & Time Sensitive but still lacked the magic to make it happen.  So, what is missing?  Two very critical pieces.

Resolution (turned SMART) + Publicity + Accountability = SUCCESS

Have you ever heard anyone announce they were going to quit smoking?  The pressure not to let anyone see them sneaking a cigarette is huge.  Making your goal to lose weight public makes you think twice before reaching for a Krispy Kreme Donut or ordering a Super Sized Big Mac Combo.

Will anyone hold you accountable for what you said you were going to do?  If we make a commitment to a customer to ship a product so that they receive it in 5 business days - do we make that happen?  You bet - unless, of course, we don't intend to keep that customer.  Do we hold ourselves accountable?   Uhhhh - different story.

If I'm holding someone accountable for the goals they've made, I want to know when and whereWhen will you walk that mile each day (first thing in the morning or in the evening)?  And, where will that occur (walk around the neighborhood or stop at the high school track on the way home)?

Want success?  Put the formula above into practice.  Otherwise, your resolution may have the effect of a congressional resolution - looks great in a frame on the wall, but has little impact on daily life.
