Spring Cleaning for your Business

Spring is a good time for cleaning out our overstuffed closets, donating gently used items to a non-profit agency and discarding the junk in our lives. Once completed, spring cleaning tends to put a bounce in our step, lift our spirits, and re-energize us. Is there some spring cleaning you need to do in your business? What is it that is sucking the energy out of your business? What metaphorical closets do you need to clean? Are there windows you could wash that would give you clearer vision? Here are just a few ideas to get you started.

  1. Financial Projections
It’s almost the end of the 1st quarter. What are your results? How do they compare with your projections? What changes do you need to make to your operations? Is there some part of your sales or expense projections that turned out to be incorrect or that needs tweaking?
  2. Planning
Perhaps you thought about making some projections for 2007, but the ideas in your head didn’t quite make it onto paper. If someone were to ask you about your sales plans for 2007, would you have a goal and a plan as to how you’re going to get there? You’ve heard it said that without a goal, any road will get you there. It's not too late to put together a plan - try putting together a plan for the next three months if a whole year seems overwhelming.
  3. Past Due Accounts Yes, we probably all have them. What would it take to clear them out – collect payment? If you’ve ever been in a situation where you had to juggle payments, who did you pay first? The vendor you knew would call if you didn’t send a payment! Be that vendor and call (with a smile, of course).

You’ve certainly experienced driving in a spring shower with windshield wipers that needed replacing. It’s difficult to see anything with a streaked windshield. Working with clear vision allows you to navigate the road ahead, steering around any potholes along the way.

So, block out some time on your calendar, turn on some of your favorite music, roll up your sleeves and you’ll soon find you’ve added cashflow and new energy back into your business.
