Multi-tasking. Not uncommon to many of us. Wearing different hats? That's my typical day, you say.
Functioning in different roles is what small business owners do as they grow their business. When we work ON our business rather than IN our business, we may have on our conservative Finance fedora one minute and the next be swaggering down the hall in our Marketing comboy hat.
But, this idea of different hats may be the key to working ON your business. Often, business owners see working ON your business as one single oversized sombrero. We're so uncomfortable wearing such a big hat that we just simply avoid it.
So, what are the hats you wear within your business? Your organizational chart might include marketing, finance, operations, and product development. What are the functions to be performed within each role? And, how much time do you spend currently in each of these roles? What percent of your efforts should be focused on each role in order to move your business forward?
Rather than thinking of these roles as one giant bucket of stuff you should do, but don't make time for, think of each role as different hats you can easily wear, a baseball cap, a fedora, a beret, or a hard hat. You don't have to put on the oversized sombrero to work ON your business. All you have to do is pick up that comfortable baseball cap and work on that one role. Schedule time in your day to try out the fedora, to work ON your business, one hat at a time. It'll seem less overwhelming than wearing that oversized sombrero and you'll find a way to squeeze in that safari hat where a sombrero would never fit.
As you begin working ON your business by scheduling each of the hats into your week, you'll find it easier to put boundaries around your time. No longer can you become all consumed with just one role because you now have incorporated each hat into your schedule. Use your hats to move your business forward.
